Walk the Talk for a hepatitis-free Timor-Leste!

Ahead of World Hepatitis Day on July 28th, WHO Timor-Leste and the Ministry of Health organized a ‘Walk The Talk’ event to raise awareness about this silent killer, a disease claiming a life every 30 seconds globally. The walk began at the Blood Bank of HNGV Hospital, where crucial screening and diagnosis work is carried out, and concluded at Ponte Habibie. Participants were pleasantly surprised by the presence of President J. Ramos-Horta, who joined towards the end of the march. “I am glad to have participated in today’s event. I learned a lot about hepatitis and, after hearing the numbers from WHO, I urge them to continue this ‘Walk The Talk’ initiative to promote health,” he said.

WHO representative Dr Arvind Mathur emphasized the urgency of this year’s theme, “It’s time for action!” He noted that in Timor-Leste, the fight against hepatitis is critical, as it is one of the three major public health challenges. “Your liver performs over 500 vital functions daily. Protecting it is crucial. Let’s work together to create a hepatitis-free Timor-Leste,” he said.
